چکیده
Kirfel, Will, and Arndt (1979) reported a quenchable new phase of Si02, synthesized in aqueous solution at 4449 kbar and 6100 C, having the space group P21/a and a crystal structure closely related to coesite. However, single-crystal X-ray and TEM studies have revealed that their observations could be the result of (100)-twinning of C2/e coesite. Therefore, a distinct P2da phase probably does not exist. The evidence is: (1) The intensity distributions in the diffraction patterns of the (100)-twinned C 2/e coesite are similar to those calculated using the reported P2da structure. (2) The leastsquares refinements using the (100)-twinned model yielded results similar to those reported for the P21/a phase. (3) The cell dimensions reported for the P2da phase, when transformed to a C2/e cell, are not significantly different from those reported by other authors for normal coesite. (4) The P 21/a phase cannot be distinguished from normal coesite on the basis of the calculated powder diffraction patterns. (5) Syntheses under a wide range of conditions have produced only C 2/e coesite crystals.

Cryogenic heat-capacity measurements on coesite and stishovite provide thermodynamic properties from 5 to 350°K. The heat capacities (C,), entropies (SO), and Gibbs energy functions [-(Go H”,)/T] are 10.85, 9.65, 4.124, and 10.27, 6.64, 2.362 at 298015°K for coesite and stishovite, respectively, in Cal/( mole “K). متن کاملShock Processes in Porous Quartzite: Transmission Electron Microscope Observations and Theory
A high-resolution study of shocked Coconino Sandstone from Meteor Crater, Arizona, was undertaken using transmission electron microscopy to investigate the textural relations of high-pressure phases produced by meteorite impact. In weakly shocked rocks (estimated average pressure, P < 100 kb), quartz in the interiors of grains retains its initial microstructure, but near original grain boundari...
متن کاملThe influence of OH in coesite on the kinetics of the coesite-quartz phase transition
Coesite is an important pressure indicator for metamorphic rocks of ultra-high pressure origin. However, it often does not survive exhumation, but reacts back to quartz. Although it was shown experimentally that hydrogen incorporation in coesite increases with increasing pressure, the few coesite relics, which are found in nature, are “dry”. Thus, does the incorporation of hydrogen promote the ...
متن کاملMagic-Angle and Dynamic-Angle Spinning NMR Study of the Si02 Polymorph Coesite
Five distinctly resolved I7O solid-state NMR resonances in room temperature coesite, an Si02 polymorph, have been observed and assigned using dynamic-angle spinning (DAS) at 11.7 T along with magic-angle spinning (MAS) spectra at 9.4 and 11.7 T. The I7O quadrupolar parameters for each of the five oxygen environments in coesite are correlated with the Si-0-Si bridging bond angles determined by d...

Mineral inclusions in diamonds provide an important source of information about the composition of the continental lithosphere at depths exceeding 120-150 km, i.e., within the diamond stability field. Fossilized high pressures in coesite inclusions from a Venezuela diamond have been identified and measured by using laser Raman and synchrotron x-ray microanalytical techniques. Micro-Raman measur...
